Lakota Plains Band Program

 

Lakota Plains currently has two 7th grade bands with a total of 130 students and two 8th grade bands with 95 students. The school also has an 8th grade jazz band during the first semester and a 7th grade jazz band during the second semester. All bands meet five days a week and are directed by Mr. Allen Schmidt and Mr. Phil Chumley.

 

Mr. Allen Schmidt holds a Bachelor of Music Education and Masters Degree in Music Education and Supervision from Central Michigan University. He is in his 8th year at Lakota schools teaching concert band and jazz band at Lakota Plains Junior School. He is also the "voice" of the Lakota West High School Marching Firebirds. Mr. Schmidt is a member of the Ohio Valley British Brass Band in Dayton Ohio, The Cincinnati Brass Band and the Polished Brass Quintet of Cincinnati. Mr. Phil Chumley is a graduate of the University of Maryland in College Park, MD (Fear the Turtle!!) He spent several years teaching at Robert Goddard Junior High School in Seabrook, MD. Moving to Ohio in 1989, Mr. Chumley resumed his teaching career at Northern Kentucky University where he was Adjunct Professor of Clarinet for a year., also teaching part time at two private schools in the Archdiocese of Covington. Throughout his years in Ohio, Mr. Chumley volunteered in many of the schools in the Lakota District, doing sectional rehearsals as well as assisting both students and directors in the preparations for Solo & Ensemble Contest. Immediately prior to coming to Lakota, Mr. Chumley taught at Jac-Cen-Del Jr/Sr High School where he taught 5th & 6th grade band, Junior High Band and Chorus, High School Band and Chorus and directed the Jac-Cen-Del High School Marching Band and Color Guard.
