On April 22, 2010 The Lakota West Jazz Ensemble traveled to Cleveland, OH to perform at the Tri-C Jazz Festvial. The band was very well received by the panel of judges, who had great praise for the group's performance. During this trip the students were also able to have a clinic with the jazz faculty at Akron University, and see a jazz performance at NightTown in Cleveland Heights. Throughout this year the West Jazz Ensemble has performed on television during the channel 12 news, at the Beavercreek Jazz Festival, and at the Dixie Classic Festival in Virginia as a part of a week long spring break tour that took the group to New York, Washington DC, and Virginia along with West's Symphonic Winds.
For their exemplary performance at the Tri-C Jazz Festival the following Lakota West students were selected from a weeks worth of high school bands to received scholarship money:
David Albanese- won $300 in scholarship money
Brian Ellerman- won $300 in scholarship money
Max Greenberg- won $500 in scholarship money and a 35% tuition waiver to Berklee School of Music Summer Jazz Studies.
Congratulations!!!
The West Jazz Ensemble was able to appear at the Tri-C jazz festival, spend an evening in Cleveland at a jazz club, and have a clinic with the jazz faculty at Akron University with no expense to the district or students. The expenses of this trip were covered by the recent fundraiser: "Battle of the Big Bands" a concert with East and West's jazz ensembles, a friendly and exciting night for both groups! Lakota East was able to help defray costs of their trip to the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival in California.
